the questions

  • do you take family portraits?
  • I'm often asked if I photograph families as well as children. The answer is, "of course!" but these are not traditional "sit together for long stretches of time and all smile politely at the camera" photos. Instead, I prefer to capture your family interacting--living and loving each other like you do every day. I adore relaxed, nontraditional captures of your family enjoying each other and firmly believe that portraits reflecting the spirit of your family will be the most treasured. If this is your goal as well, then we will get along splendidly. Many families enjoy choosing an activity that represents their day-to-day life and having that as the focus of at least part of the session--things such as the blowing bubbles in the backyard, the whole family hanging out on the bed and having a tickle fight or two, washing the dog, even going out for donuts or ice cream. The possibilities are limitless! Most of all, I'll just ask you to be you. The number one comment I hear as I leave (especially from dads) is "this was so easy!"
  • what about newborn sessions? how does they work?
  • If sleepy, curled-up newborn portraits are important to you, you'll want to commission your newborn session when you are expecting so we can capture the ideal 5-7 day "window"; I'll enter your due date into my calendar and we'll choose the exact date when the baby arrives. BUT--and you won't hear too many photographers admit this--I love "older" newborns as well, so if your baby has already arrived, let me know and we'll still plan a beautiful session! Like every Joyce Smith Photography experience, newborn sessions are relaxed and pressure-free, with plenty of time for nursing, diaper changes, etc.
